In 1987, botanist Hugh Wilson began an unconventional ecological restoration project across 109 hectares of degraded hillside on New Zealand's Banks Peninsula. Local farmers initially dismissed his strategy as foolish because he chose to leave invasive gorse shrubs untouched rather than clearing or burning them. Wilson recognized that the prickly gorse created a sheltered, moisture-rich microclimate that protected emerging native tree seedlings. As the native trees matured and grew taller than the surrounding brush, they naturally shaded out the gorse, allowing the indigenous forest canopy to re-establish itself without chemical or mechanical intervention. The project required removing obstacles to natural regeneration, such as grazing livestock, while letting natural ecological processes drive the recovery. Today, the protected area has expanded into the 1,500-hectare Hinewai Reserve, recognized as the largest private nature reserve in New Zealand. The rejuvenated landscape features 47 permanently flowing waterfalls and has enabled native bird species to return to surrounding agricultural lands. Wilson, now in his eighties, continues to manage the reserve and keeps it open to the public free of charge.
